In October 2003, Ko & Associates led a team including Alpha & Omega Group to inspect the Neuse and Trent River Bridges and the US 70 / US 17 interchange structures in Craven County, North Carolina. The contract included 17 structures (16 bridges and one culvert) and was the first ever consultant-led inspection of the complex interchange and nearly 2-mile long channel crossing.
The Neuse River Bridge project was one of the largest single public works projects ever undertaken in North Carolina. This project provided a complex, yet highly functional, bypass at the historic town of New Bern and was accomplished with special consideration to numerous environmental, social and historic issues posed by the community. The project also included a complex interchange on the West Side of the Neuse River, which lay partly over water.
The initial inspection and analysis of the state-owned structures was done by state personnel, but two years later the job was advertised to the consultant community and won by a team led by Ko & Associates. We inspected and analyzed 7 of the bridges, including the 10,000 ft long main bridge (half steel plate girders and half prestressed bulb tees) as well as all of the ramp bridges for the interchange over the river.
