NELSON FARM ROAD BRIDGES
Greensboro, North Carolina
In 1998 Ko & Associates was awarded the design of a pair of bridges on the I-85 Bypass over Nelson Farm Road and North Little Alamance Creek by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The I-85 Bypass project, opened to traffic in March of 2004, is a 13.5 mile stretch of highway that bypasses the severely congested I-40 junction in Greensboro and ties to I-85 north of High Point.

The dual bridges, one six spans and one four spans, are on a curved alignment with the girders along straight chords.  The superstructure consists of reinforced concrete cast-in-
place deck supported by simple span steel rolled beams and plate girders. The spans are all trapezoidal or heavily skewed, with angles ranging from -41 degrees to +20 degrees (measured from perpendicular) and lengths varying from 10 meters (33 ft) to 36 meters (118 ft).

The end bents are reinforced concrete caps on steel piles. The interior bents are reinforced concrete post and beam on drilled shaft foundations.
