In 2000, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) selected Ko & Associates to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) as well as functional and preliminary highway designs for the US 64/ US 601 Bypass of Mocksville in Davie County, NC. This corridor consists of a new location freeway, approximately eight miles long, to route traffic around the congested downtown area of Mocksville, connecting US 601 and US 64 with I-40. This is designated as part of the US 64 Strategic Highway Corridor.

Ko & Associates is working with NCDOT to focus environmental planning and design studies on five new location freeway corridors, one around the east side of Mocksville, and four around the west side. The proposed alternatives are being developed to avoid and minimize effects, to the extent possible, on the human and natural environment. Major engineering and environmental planning efforts include:
|
Reports detailing the purpose and need and preliminary alternatives considered for the project
- Coordination with an Interagency project team to reach concurrence on key milestones in the project development process (purpose and need, detailed study alternatives, selected alternative, and impact minimization)
- Natural resource investigations to determine potential effects on streams, wetlands, water supply watersheds, and federally protected species
- A comprehensive public involvement program that includes public workshops, newsletters, small group meetings, and hearings
- Cultural resources investigations to identify historic and archaeological sites
- Traffic capacity, traffic noise, and air quality studies
- Evaluation of social, economic, and indirect/ cumulative effects in the study area
- Development of functional and preliminary roadway and interchange designs
- Preliminary hydraulic design studies
