In 1991, Ko & Associates was selected by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to prepare final construction plans for Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard (formerly known as Smith Creek Parkway). This would prove to be Ko & Associates’ stepping stone to building their highly respected roadway design team, as this was their first roadway design project assignment.
The project is 2.95 miles in length. This major urban arterial provides a vital link from the I-40 corridor in New Hanover County to portions of the Wilmington downtown district. The project consisted of a six-lane facility on new location, incorporating two major signalized intersections.
Ko & Associates’ was responsible for roadway and hydraulic design and traffic control and pavement marking plans. The construction cost for this project was $13,100,000.
