Ko & Associates completed the design, construction documents, bid administration and construction management for the Tennessee Stream Restoration Program (TSMP) with the restoration of over 3,000 linear feet of a gravel bed stream in the Valley and Ridge physiographic province of the Upper Tennessee Clinch/Emory River Basin. The watershed of the project is currently experiencing urban expansion from Knoxville, which is causing the watershed to transition from a rural to an urban environment. The site contains three tributaries, two of which are designed for restoration. Both channels have numerous stream types that were incorporated into each channel’s design. The designed stream types include B4, C4, and E4 stream types. The proposed channels are designed to reconnect bankfull and higher flows to its historic floodplain. Rock Cross Vanes, Rock Vanes, L-Vanes, Log Vanes, Log Sills, and Rock Step Structures are used in the design to reduce near bank stress, to ensure bed form diversity, and as a means of grade control. Site constraints included two areas of historical significance identified by the State Historic Preservation Office and state archeologists, and road embankments. The staff of Ko have completed numerous design concepts at the request of the TSMP to satisfy agency concerns over the location of the proposed channel. Designs were developed to address these site constraints and provide long term stability to each area of concern.
