MANGO CREEK AND NEUSE RIVER BRIDGES
Raleigh, North Carolina
In 2000, Ko & Associates was awarded a traditional contract to design three bridges for the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s US 64 Knightdale Bypass project in Wake County. The contract included a four-span continuous prestressed girder bridge on Hodge Road over the US 64 Bypass in addition to a pair of six-span prestressed bulb tee structures carrying the eastbound and westbound lanes of the US 64 Bypass over Mango Creek.
The plans were completed and turned in before NCDOT released the entire Knightdale Bypass project as a design-build package. The successful bidder used Ko’s original design for the bridge on Hodge Road, but the Mango Creek structures were to be re-designed completely for environmental permitting reasons.
In 2003 Ko was invited to assist the LPA Group, the lead design firm on for the design-build team, with the re-design of the dual bridges. The Mango Creek structures had been combined with the adjacent Neuse River structures, resulting in a pair of bridges with 15 eastbound spans and 16 westbound spans. Our role was to develop plans and calculations for the 460 meter (1509 ft), 15 span prestressed bulb tee structure carrying the eastbound lanes of US 64.
The design-build process presented a new set of challenges for our team. Due to the accelerated construction schedule, the structure was designed from the bottom up. Substructure elements were designed first in order for the contractor to begin the construction.
The bridges are currently under construction and the Knightdale Bypass is scheduled to open in early 2006. The construction cost for the entire project is $133,000,000.
