In 2000 Ko & Associates, P.C. was awarded a contract by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to provide Traffic Control and Pavement Marking Plans for a 3.4 km section of relocation and widening (from four lanes to eight lanes) of I-85 in Durham, North Carolina. The contract was a part of a Limited Services Agreement contract awarded to Ko & Associates, P.C. for on-call traffic engineering design services. The project involved reconstruction of three major interchanges. Design was completed in 2003. Construction is underway, begun in late 2003 with a bid exceeding $66,600,000.
High volumes of commuter and through traffic made interchange reconstruction on this urban interstate project challenging, particularly relocating the existing exit from southbound I-85 to southbound US 15-501 from a left exit to a right exit. Widening of major cross roads at Hillandale Road and Guess Road required meticulous phasing to incorporate acceptable vertical clearances, temporary bridges, stage bridge construction and maintenance of drainage.
Ko & Associates, P.C. was honored to be contracted by the Department to participate in the construction phase of the project. Ko & Associates, P.C. is on call to participate in monthly construction meetings, respond to the contractor’s requests for information and to revise the plans as needed to accommodate field conditions. The Department has implemented this process on very few of the more complex traffic control projects.
