I-440 WIDENING / CONCRETE PAVEMENT REPLACEMENT

In 1999 Ko & Associates, P.C. was awarded a contract by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to provide Traffic Control and Pavement Marking Plans for a 5.1 mile section of widening (from four lanes to six lanes) and concrete pavement replacement on I-440 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The contract was a part of a Limited Services Agreement contract awarded to Ko & Associates, P.C. for on-call traffic engineering design services. The project involved access at two major interchanges and exceeded $18,000,000 in cost. Construction was completed in 2002.
High volumes of commuter traffic made placement of concrete pavement a challenge on this urban interstate project. Many innovative techniques and materials were incorporated into the project, including high early strength concrete and substantial liquidated damages. The above picture is taken from the Poole Road overpass looking south at I-440.
Ko & Associates, P.C. was honored to be contracted by the Department to participate in the construction phase of the project. This was an experimental step by the Department – Traffic Control Unit, necessitated by the complex nature of the project and high traffic volumes. Ko & Associates, P.C. attended monthly construction meetings and was on call throughout the life of the project to adapt the plans to field conditions as necessary. The I-440 project was the first time this highly successful concept was used and the process has since been implemented by the Department on highly complex traffic control projects.
