In 1998, Ko & Associates was selected by the North Carolina
Department of Transportation to prepare final construction plans for
I-240 widening in the southwestern portion of Asheville.
The project is 2.4 miles in length. This major urban interstate
provides a vital link from the I-40 corridor, where I-26 terminates south
of Asheville, to the I-26 corridor (A10) north of Asheville. The project
consisted of widening the existing four-lane divided facility to an eight-lane
divided facility, incorporating two tight urban diamond interchanges and one
semi-directional interchange. The project was completed through right-of-way
plans before being delayed pending completion of additional environmental
studies that became necessary.
Ko & Associates’ was responsible for roadway and hydraulic design and
traffic control and pavement marking plans. The construction cost for this
project is estimated to be $58,000,000.
