In 1999, Ko & Associates was awarded the design of our first curved steel plate girder bridge for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The bridge, completed in 2002, carries Gresham Lake Road over Raleigh’s I-540 Outer Loop near the US 1 (Capital Boulevard) exit ramp.
Construction on this project, the fifth segment of I-540, started in November 1999. This portion of the freeway completed a vital connection between two federal system routes: I-40 and US 1 (Capital Boulevard). Completion of this portion of I-540 brought its total length to 17 miles, nearly one quarter of the planned length.
The bridge is a two-span continuous curved steel plate girder structure with a cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck. The spans measure 40.9 meters (134 ft) and 48.4 meters (159 ft) for a total structure length of 89.3 meters (293 ft).
The substructure is skewed at approximately 60 degrees to the bridge alignment. The end bents are reinforced concrete caps on steel piles and the interior bent is reinforced concrete post and beam on pile footings.
