In 2002, Ko & Associates was selected as a subconsultant to Parsons Brinckerhoff for design of the bridge on line 13 of the Mount Pleasant Interchange, part of the Cooper River Bridge Replacement Project.
The new cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River will replace both existing bridges, connecting historic downtown Charleston and Mt. Pleasant. The Cooper River Bridge, to be named the Arthur B. Ravenel Bridge, will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, spanning 1,546 feet. The total project cost is $531 million.
The project is broken down into five separate but simultaneous projects: two interchanges, two high-level approaches and a main span. In contrast to the very narrow existing bridges, the Arthur B. Ravenel Bridge will have a main span eight lanes wide and a 12 ft wide bicycle and pedestrian lane.
The structure on line 13, designed by Ko & Associates, consists of a 400 ft long two-span continuous curved steel girder bridge and a 875 ft long seven-span continuous precast prestressed bulb tee bridge. The piers are reinforced concrete hammerheads on 6 ft diameter columns on 8 ft diameter drilled shafts.
