CHOWAN RIVER BRIDGE
Edenton, North Carolina
In 1996, Ko & Associates worked as a sub-consultant to Wilbur Smith Associates on the design of the 1.8 mile (2.9 km) long bridge carrying the new alignment of US 17 over the Chowan River (linking Bertie and Chowan Counties in eastern North Carolina). Ko & Associates designed the 1,333 ft (406.4 m) long land trestle for the Chowan County approach. The low level approach structure consisted of 24 spans of precast prestressed beams on piles supported trestle bent caps.
The total construction cost for the structure was nearly $40 million. The new bridge, with a vertical clearance over the main channel of more than 130 ft (40 m), allows unimpeded access for tall masted sailing vessels between the Chowan River and the Albemarle Sound. The new four-lane structure replaced a low, two-lane structure with a swing truss over the navigational channel.
