BRYAN BOULEVARD RELOCATION
Greensboro, North Carolina
In 2002, Ko & Associates was awarded an all inclusive design contract for the relocation of Bryan Boulevard by the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority in cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The 2.7 mile 4-lane divided facility incorporated a single interchange consisting of providing fully directional movement between relocated Bryan Boulevard and existing Bryan Boulevard and also incorporating semi-directional movements between relocated Bryan Boulevard and relocated Old Oak Ridge Road and between existing Bryan Boulevard and relocated Old Oak Ridge Road.
The relocation of Bryan Boulevard was necessary to accommodate air side expansion, land side expansion, and surface transportation issues resulting from the proposed FedEx air cargo hub. The FedEx hub will serve the Eastern United States from the Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTIA) in Greensboro, North Carolina. The design for relocated Bryan Boulevard was driven by the proposed construction of an adjacent 9000 ft long runway with flight path restrictions over the proposed interchange site and the need for significant upgrades to the surface transportation system to allow for the PTIA and the FedEx hub to be operated in an efficient manner.
The project design was completed within an aggressive schedule of 300 calendar days from notice to proceed to completion of final contract documents. The project low bid of approximately $44 million was more than $10 million under the original budgeted amount in NCDOT’s Transportation Improvement Program.
